A longer more detailed article on the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s stance on vacation rentals!
The American Hotel & Lobbying Association is launching a nationwide campaign to get federal and local governments to crack down on short term rentals “facilitated through websites such as AirBnB”. Their main concern is ensuring that everyone is playing on a level playing field mostly concerning taxes but they have also hinted at Department of Health regulations which would be much more difficult for short term rentals to comply with. This is something we are keeping an eye on here at VRMAWA and why it’s imperative we have a strong alliance with the Washington Lodging Association!
The Washington Supreme Court ruling in this long running lawsuit was filed yesterday in favor of Vacation Rental Owners. Their conclusion:
Association and granted summary judgment in favor of the Wilkinsons. The
covenants in effect before the 20 11 amendment allowed Chiwawa homeowners to rent their homes without limitations on duration. Such short-term rentals do not violate the ban on commercial use or the requirement that structures be suitable for single-family residential use. Because a durational restriction on rentals would be inconsistent with the 198811992 covenants, it cannot be adopted by a simple majority vote of Chiwawa homeowners. Therefore, the 2011 amendment barring short-term
rentals was invalid. We affirm.”
